This policy explains how the Gloaming app for iPhone ("Gloaming", "we", "us") handles information. Gloaming is built by Pidugu, an independent software studio, and is distributed through the Apple App Store.
The short version: Gloaming has no accounts, no ads, no analytics, and no tracking. Your location is used on your device to compute where the Sun, Moon, and Milky Way are. The one thing that leaves your device is your approximate coordinates, sent to an elevation service to draw your real horizon — nothing that identifies you. The camera is used only to show the live sky behind the overlay; it is never recorded, saved, or uploaded.
Information we collect
We do not collect, store, or sell personal information that identifies you. Gloaming has no user accounts and contains no analytics, advertising, or tracking technology. The sections below describe the device permissions Gloaming uses and the single external request it makes.
Location
With your permission, Gloaming uses your device location while you're using the app for two things:
- To calculate the positions (azimuth and altitude), rise/set, and golden/blue-hour times of the Sun, Moon, and Milky Way for exactly where you are. This is computed on your device.
- To align the augmented-reality view to true north (the device uses your location to correct the compass). This also happens on your device.
To draw your real horizon (the terrain silhouette), Gloaming sends your approximate coordinates — and a set of nearby sample points around you — to Open-Meteo's public elevation service to look up ground elevations, then draws the skyline from the result. This request contains only coordinates; it includes no name, account, device identifier, or other personal information. It happens only while the terrain feature is turned on, and you can turn it off at any time. We do not store your location.
Camera
The augmented-reality view uses your camera so the Sun, Moon, and Milky Way overlay can sit on top of the live sky. The camera feed is shown in real time on your device only — it is never recorded, saved, or transmitted, and Gloaming does not take or store photos.
Network & offline use
The astronomy and AR features work entirely offline. Gloaming connects to the internet only to fetch terrain elevation from Open-Meteo when the terrain skyline is enabled. Gloaming runs no server of its own and does not "phone home" with usage data.
On your device only
Your in-app settings (which bodies are shown, true-size and terrain toggles, the date/time you're viewing) stay on your device. They are not sent to us, and deleting the app removes them.
Purchases
Gloaming is currently free, with no in-app purchases. If we add optional paid features in the future, they will be sold through Apple's in-app purchase system — Apple handles the transaction and we never see your name, card, or billing details. We will update this policy before introducing any such feature.
Analytics & tracking
There are none. Gloaming contains no analytics SDKs, no advertising, no third-party trackers, and no device identifiers used for tracking. We do not build a profile of you across apps or websites.
Third parties
Gloaming relies on two third parties, and neither receives information that identifies you:
- Apple — App Store distribution (and, if we ever add them, in-app purchases).
- Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) — provides ground-elevation data. It receives only approximate coordinates in order to return elevations, with no personal identifiers attached.
We do not share information with advertisers, data brokers, or analytics services.
Children's privacy
Gloaming is suitable for all ages and does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children under 13. If you have any concern, please contact us.
Your rights
Because we don't collect personal information that can identify you, there is nothing for us to look up, export, correct, or delete on your behalf. If you believe we hold personal information about you and wish to exercise rights under the GDPR, CCPA, or another privacy law, email us and we'll respond promptly.
Changes to this policy
If we update this policy, we'll post the new version here and change the effective date above. We won't reduce the protections described here without making the change clear.
